Residents at Glenaire, a continuing care retirement community in Cary, N.C., awarded $10,000 in scholarships to five graduating high school employees planning enrollment in accredited post-secondary schools this fall.
The scholarships were made available through the generosity of a Glenaire resident couple and the Glenaire Foundation. In 2003 this couple provided $100,000 to the foundation to establish the “Wait Staff Scholarship Fund.” Glenaire employs high school students as wait staff in the main dining room. The couple was inspired to establish the fund based upon their own work experience while in school. These donors established the scholarship fund to encourage these high school students to further their formal education.
This year all five high school senior employees who applied for educational assistance were awarded scholarships. Selection is based upon length of service and demonstrated work ethic. Three students will attend N.C. State University and two will enroll at East Carolina University. The scholarship recipients, all from Cary, include Dominick Downing (Cary High School/NCSU), Winnie Hui (Cary High School/ECU), Lauren Koepnick (Athens Drive High School/NCSU), Keia Lusk (Panther Creek High School/ECU) and Zakiya Toney (Panther Creek High School/NCSU).
One scholarship recipient said of her experience at Glenaire, “My time at Glenaire has offered priceless insight into the value of serving others as well as other essential skills such as time management and working with others. I hope this scholarship and the lessons that I have learned as a waitress at Glenaire will aid in my pursuit of higher education.”
The donors have encouraged other residents to include the Wait Staff Scholarship Fund in their planned giving to ensure that future student employees will continue to enjoy the opportunities afforded through higher education. Tax-deductible donations may be sent to The Glenaire Foundation, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary NC 27511 and designated "Wait Staff Scholarship Fund".
